about

This song is a conversation between an addict and someone who loves the addict dearly and want to see them free from the powerful forces that are taking over there brain.

It tells of the split personality that addiction creates in a person. While at one moment they are on top of the world and want to stay up there forever, in the next moment they admit that they are possessed and helpless to escape the destructive forces that are tearing there worlds apart.

It is a heart-breaking story that does not end well for either the addict or for the one trying to save them

They talk and talk and try to understand one another but in the end, and in many cases in this world, the song ends with the one trying to save the addict saying ‘I’m sorry you never came down’ in the stone cold conclusion that, on this occasion, the addict did not win the battle.

lyrics

Small town fairy tale – The Purple Shoes

Oh my darling what if we never come down
What if we stay up here forever on the inside looking out
Oh my darling, what if we spend our lives
Looking for something different
Looking to get out

Would they know?
Would they miss us?
If we left without a trace
Would it even make a difference?

Live and die and be remembered in a small town fairy tale
Oh my darling I might be giving you tough love
But I won’t go down with you, when you can’t get enough
All I’m saying from the outside looking in
You’re running from yourself in a race you cannot win

Would they know?
Would they miss us?
If we left without a trace
Would it even make a difference?
Live a die and be remembered in a small town fairy tale

Oh my darling it isn’t a friend of mine
This abusive acquaintance
Is taking all my time
All I’m saying it isn’t what it seems
This beautiful poison is haunting all my dreams

Cause my start was not fresh
And my canvas was creased
Would it even make a difference?
Live and die and be remembered in a small town fairy tale at least

Oh my darling what is this all about?
Can we take the bits from the pieces and figure it all out
We’ve put our cards on the table now let’s make a feast
I know you’re not a preacher but I’ll listen to you preach

Cause your start was not fresh
And your canvas was creased
Would it even make a difference?
Live and die and be remembered in a small town fairy tale at least

Oh my darling, I’ve spent all my life
Trying to make you different trying to turn you around
I keep asking myself why oh my darling
I’m sorry you never came down
I’m sorry you never came down
I’m sorry you never came down
I’m sorry you never came down
